iS3 Security Alert

FTC Cracks Down on Foreign Tech Support

In a recent security alert provided by iS3, readers were advised of an increase in frequency of scam calls from illegitimate tech support companies.

  • Unsolicited calls to any person.
  • Scammer will introduce him/herself as a tech support agent from a well-know company, try to gain access to your computer via a remote connection and claim your computer is full of viruses and malware, and offer to fix them for a significant amount of money.
  • Federal Trade Commission has been pursuing legal action against the offshore firms that run these illegitimate operations, bringing their operations to a halt and seizing funds. These firms have been charged with violating the FTC act, which protects consumers against unfair and deceptive commercial practices and those on the Do Not Call list.

iS3 has a USA Based tech support organization known as STOPzilla Tech Support (www.stopzilla.com). If you receive a call from an offshore or American company pretending to be STOPzilla (no one from STOPzilla will ask to get onto your computer unsolicited), politely ask the person for their name and extension, tell them you will immediately call them back, and dial the STOPzilla Toll Free number at 1-877-877-9944, then type in the extension you were given to validate and authenticate you are speaking to a STOPzilla representative.
